Man arrested for DUI after crashing into building

(February 25, 2025) — On Monday, February 24, 2025, at around 3 AM, officers with the Cape Coral Police Department responded to a condo complex in the 300-block of Cape Coral Parkway West, Cape Coral, Florida, in reference to an Apple Watch accident alert.

Officers observed a silver Kia Sorento crashed near the building. No one was inside the vehicle. Officers made contact with the registered owner of the vehicle, later identified as Alex Wilson (DOB 04/15/97). Wilson was standing next to the front passenger side of the Kia Sorrento. He was later found to be the driver and sole occupant of the Sorento involved in the crash.

The crash investigation revealed Wilson was at fault for the crash. He struck a sign at the intersection of Cape Coral Pkwy W & Pelican Blvd, then a fire hydrant and bushes in front of the condo complex – causing him to lose his front passenger side tire – then hit a parked, unoccupied van, which struck a beam on the building, then crashed his vehicle into another beam. The van, which had a value of $18,000, was totaled, and a set of $2500 golf clubs inside were destroyed.

Officers informed Wilson that the crash investigation was complete, and they were changing hats to a DUI investigation.

All witnesses on scene identified Wilson as the driver. They told officers that when they asked Wilson if anyone else was in the vehicle, he said no. Wilson told witnesses he was just trying to get home.

Officers noticed a strong odor of an alcoholic beverage on Wilson’s breath and that he had bloodshot, watery eyes, and slurred speech.

Wilson wished to be taken to the hospital by Lee County EMS to be evaluated. He told EMS personnel he was at his dad’s house drinking wine. He also told EMS he was driving, saw something yellow in the road, and swerved to avoid hitting it. It should be noted that the fire hydrant Wilson struck and destroyed in the crash was yellow.

Wilson agreed to provide breath samples, which provided a reading of .172 and .177.

Wilson was medically cleared. Based on the investigation, he was arrested on the following charges:

–1 count in violation of F.S.S. 316.193(4), DUI .15 or higher

–4 counts in violation of F.S.S. 316.193(3)(c)(1), DUI property damage

A building Inspector responded and determined that the damaged beams on the building were not structural/support beams.

Arrested: Alex Wilson (DOB 04/15/97)
