Seven out of the eleven total criminal traffic citations involved driving on a suspended license. This is increasingly becoming an issue, and we’d like to educate the community on the top tips on how to avoid this.

  1. Ensure you change your address with DMV as soon you move: many notices and tickets may be sent to your address. If you aren’t getting notices in the mail, you lose your ability to fix the issue at hand.
  2. When you switch over insurance, you cannot have a gap. Any gap notifies the DMV, and they may view your case as driving without insurance, and your license can be suspended.
  3. Make sure you handle all tickets/fines. Even if you believe you were wrongly cited, you still have to select the option that you are requesting a court date if that is the route you’d like to go.
  4. If you sell your vehicle, make sure you turn in your tag within 30 days. If you fail to turn in your tag and stop paying insurance on the vehicle, the DMV may view your status as driving without insurance.
  5. You must pay your tolls: tolls are billed by plate and failure to pay can result in a suspected license.
  6. Court fees and failure to attend driver schools mandated by the court can also result in a suspended license.
  7. IF YOU KNOW YOUR LICENSE IS SUSPENDED, DON’T DRIVE.

If you think your license may be suspended or would like to check your status, check with the DMV. You can do a driver’s license check online at https://mydmvportal.flhsmv.gov/home/en/publicweb/dlcheck/
