On Wednesday, March 20th, at around 9:34 AM, Cape Coral Police Officers received multiple reports that a female in her thirties was shot and lying in the street near the 1700 block of Southeast 12th Street. Callers updated that they believed it was the victim’s ex-boyfriend who shot the female victim while he was picking up their children in common. The boyfriend took off in his vehicle with two children in the car.
The male was called on the phone and stated he wanted to kill himself. He dropped the children off with nearby firefighters. He then drove down a nearby street, where he was confronted by one of our officers. During the exchange with our officer, the suspect shot himself, and his vehicle rolled into a canal. The male was pronounced deceased at the scene. Our officer is uninjured.
The female victim was quickly rushed to the hospital, where she was pronounced deceased.
The children are safe in the custody of the family.
This murder-suicide was a domestic and isolated incident. There is no threat to the community. As the investigation is concluding, we are still waiting on next of kin for both parties to be notified. Our deepest sympathies are with the families. If and when there are updates in this case, we will let you know.
