Detective Cracks $19K Construction Theft Case

(August 23, 2024) — On May 23, 2024, around 7:30 AM, a Public Service Aid for the Cape Coral Police Department in Cape Coral responded to a construction site in Northwest Cape Coral and took a report for grand theft. The project manager explained that ten windows and four impact sliders were delivered earlier in the week. The windows and sliders were gone when the installers came the day after delivery. The total estimated cost for the items stolen was over $19,000.

The Cape Coral Police Department’s Property Crimes Unit launched an investigation. A local security camera in the area revealed a dark grey pickup truck with a trailer driving through an intersection near the home. The contents in the trailer appeared to be several windows and sliders. The detective followed the direction of the truck through traffic cameras. A license plate reader caught the tag on the vehicle. Based on an identifiable tag, the detective was able to identify the registered owner as Alejandro Rodriguez (DOB 04/10/1992).

The investigation revealed that Alejandro Rodriguez was hired to deliver the windows and sliders and provide an estimate for installation that included total measurements. However, Alejandro was not ultimately chosen for the installation job. Therefore, he went back to the property he had previously delivered the windows and sliders to and stole the same windows and doors that belonged to and were paid for by the builder. Alejandro Rodriguez planned to sell the property he stole to a different buyer for $6,000.

Alejandro Rodriguez was arrested and charged with the following:

–1 count in violation of F.S.S. 810.02(4)(a), Burglary of an Unoccupied Structure

–1 count in violation of F.S.S. 812.019(2), Dealing in Stolen Property

–1 count in violation of F.S.S. 812.014(2)(c)(10), Grand Theft from a Posted Construction Site

Arrested: Alejandro Rodriguez (W/M 04/10/1992, 1809 NE 21st Place, Cape Coral)
