CAPE CORAL, Fla. – Cape Coral Police officers arrested a Fort Myers man early this morning after he allegedly shattered a glass panel beside the front door of an occupied home and forced his upper body through the opening in an attempt to get inside.
At approximately 2:08 a.m. on October 7, officers were dispatched to the 2400 block of SW 39th Street for a burglary in progress. Upon arrival, they found a man standing on the front lawn, yelling aggressively. Officers then detained the man, later identified as Alex Dones (DOB 4/30/2007), while the investigation was conducted.
Investigators determined that Dones allegedly struck the home’s front door and glass sidelight until it shattered, then pushed his arm and upper body through the opening. He stopped only after the homeowner, who had armed himself to protect his family, warned that he would shoot. Dones then allegedly fled along the side of the house, struck the garage door, entered the enclosed rear lanai, and pounded on the sliding glass doors leading into the living room.
Officers documented broken glass throughout the entryway and fresh blood evidence on both the front door frame and the rear sliding doors. Damage to the residence is estimated at approximately $5,000.
When officers attempted to place Dones in a patrol vehicle, he resisted by tensing his body and refusing to put his legs inside. He was safely secured without further incident. Dones was transported to the Lee County Jail and faces the following charges:
- Burglary of an Occupied Dwelling (F.S. 810.02(3)(a))
- Criminal Mischief, Damage of $1,000 or Greater (F.S. 806.13(1)(b)(3))
- Resisting an Officer Without Violence (F.S. 843.02)
