CAPE CORAL, FL — On the morning of Monday, July 13, 2026, Cape Coral Police Department officers successfully apprehended three juvenile suspects involved in a string of vehicle burglaries at a local apartment complex.
At approximately 2:51 AM, patrol units responded to a call regarding suspicious individuals breaking into vehicles. Officers quickly saturated the area, utilizing drone and aviation support to establish a perimeter. Two suspects were found hiding in nearby bushes, and a third suspect was located hiding behind parked vehicles shortly after. All three were detained without further incident.
An investigation revealed the suspects were “car hopping”—targeting unlocked vehicles to steal cash and valuables. In total, four vehicles were confirmed to have been burglarized overnight.
Officers recovered several stolen items directly from the suspects at the scene, which were subsequently returned to the rightful owners. High-value items targeted and recovered included:
- A white gold diamond ring (valued at $1,000)
- Multiple vehicle key fobs and key rings
- A pair of Ray-Ban designer sunglasses
The three male juveniles—aged 15, 15, and 17—were transported to the Juvenile Assessment Center in Fort Myers. They face the following charges:
- Burglary of an Unoccupied Conveyance (3 counts — Third Degree Felony)
- Grand Theft ($750 or more, but less than $5,000) (1 count — Third Degree Felony)
- Petit Theft (2nd Degree) (1 count — Second Degree Misdemeanor)
As additional reports are received, more charges may be applied.
Coordinated Enforcement Drives Sharp Decline in Property Crime
While Monday’s overnight arrests highlight an immediate response to active property crime, they also reflect a successful trend across Cape Coral this summer. Thanks to a strategic, department-wide initiative targeting serial offenders, vehicle burglaries have plummeted compared to the same period last year.
Summer Vehicle Burglary Statistics:
- June 1 – July 31, 2025: 85 past-occurred, 10 in-progress (95 total incidents)
- June 1 – July 14, 2026: 27 past-occurred, 8 in-progress (35 total incidents)
This dramatic reduction is a direct outcome of targeted initiative in the Community Services Bureau, whose proactive task force work conducting strict juvenile and curfew compliance checks—particularly for juveniles on probation—has been instrumental in disrupting property crime rings before they start. In that timeframe, officers conducted 143 juvenile contacts and 77 secure juvenile contacts. These proactive efforts have correlated to an overall reduction in reported vehicle burglaries-incidents which have historically involved juvenile offenders.
The Cape Coral Police Department reminds residents to continue partnering with us by locking vehicle doors, removing all valuables from sight, and never leaving spare keys or fobs inside unattended vehicles.
