Motorcyclist Arrested After Attempting to Flee Traffic Stop and Crashing into Vehicles

Cape Coral, FL – On March 31, 2026, at around 10 AM, an officer with the Cape Coral Police Department was on the north side of Veterans Memorial Parkway, just east of Country Club Boulevard, completing a traffic stop when he observed a black motorcycle traveling westbound without a license plate.

The motorcycle stopped at a red light at Country Club Boulevard. After confirming there was no tag attached, the officer activated his emergency lights and positioned his patrol vehicle behind the motorcycle to initiate a traffic stop.

The driver looked over his shoulder, observed the officer’s emergency lights, and began revving the engine in an apparent attempt to flee. As the officer exited his vehicle and approached on foot, the motorcycle accelerated, sideswiping a white Toyota Camry traveling westbound before crashing into the rear driver-side bumper and tailgate of a black Ford F-150 stopped in traffic.

The driver, later identified as Shane Scott Bumgarner (DOB 01/22/1989), was thrown from the motorcycle and immediately detained by the officer. The passenger was also thrown from the motorcycle but was able to get up on their own.

During the investigation, the officer recovered a knife, wallet, and a small black canister from Bumgarner. A glass pipe containing drug residue was located near the motorcycle. The pipe field-tested positive for methamphetamine, and the canister tested positive for cocaine.

Bumgarner was transported to a local hospital for treatment of non-life-threatening injuries, including shoulder pain and lacerations to his hands.

Further investigation revealed Bumgarner’s driver’s license had multiple suspensions, most recently related to a DUI. He also did not possess a valid motorcycle endorsement or registration.

After being medically cleared, Shane Scott Bumgarner (DOB 01/22/1989) was transported to the Lee County Jail and charged with:

  • Failure to Register a Motor Vehicle
  • Knowingly Driving While License Suspended
  • Operating a Motorcycle Without a Motorcycle Endorsement
  • Fleeing and Eluding / Failure to Obey a Law Enforcement Officer
  • Two Counts of Possession of Drug Paraphernalia

He was also issued a citation for driving between lanes.
