Man Arrested for Six Hit and Run Accidents

(April 18, 2024) — On April 17, 2024, at 10:05 AM, Officers working for the Cape Coral Police Department were conducting high visibility traffic enforcement in the area of Skyline Boulevard and Veterans Memorial Parkway.

An Officer observed a white Ford Fusion going 55 MPH in a posted 30 MPH zone and turned on his emergency lights. The driver, later identified as Sean McGrath (DOB 02/03/2003), made eye contact with the Officer and continued down the roadway at a high rate of speed. The Officer continued after the car, attempting to get the car to pull over with lights and sirens. The vehicle continued driving and collided with two cars. McGrath still failed to stop and fled from the Officer.

The Officer lost sight of the vehicle and stopped at the hit-and-run accident to check if anyone in the other cars had injuries. The Officer started tending to possible injuries in a vehicle with deployed airbags and the driver still inside.

McGrath continued to flee and hit six vehicles total. Another Officer witnessed one of the accidents and saw McGrath exit the vehicle and run into the surrounding fields. The Officer ran after McGrath. A UPS delivery driver saw the accident and saw McGrath flee from the driver’s seat of the car. The UPS driver came to help the Officer. The Officer stated McGrath ran off, but ultimately obeyed commands to stop and was quickly detained.

McGrath stated he saw the initial Officer turn on his lights and try to stop him. McGrath said he did not stop because he did not have a driver’s license. FCIC/NCIC records showed that McGrath has a valid license out of Illinois.

Sean McGrath was arrested and taken to the Lee County Jail based on the following charges:

–1 count in violation of F.S.S 316.1935, Fleeing and eluding

–1 count in violation of F.S.S 316.192(1)(A), Reckless driving
